A clinical trial is a research study in which research participants receive an investigational treatment under the supervision of a physician and other research professionals. The treatments are developed by pharmaceutical companies, who then select qualified physicians to serve as investigators to conduct the trial to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the treatment. Participants in a clinical research trial play a more active role in their health care, gain access to new research treatments before they are widely available, and help others by contributing to medical research. Clinical trials have guidelines unique to each trial about who can participate, using inclusion/exclusion criteria to identify appropriate participants and keep them safe. The criteria ensures that researchers will be able to answer the questions they plan to study. Inclusion and exclusion criteria are based on factors such as age, gender, type of disease, previous conditions, and other medical conditions.
