insomniaInsomnia is a very common problem. It is estimated that 30 – 35% of adults have at least transient insomnia.

Insomnia is defined as difficulty with falling or staying asleep, and associated daytime dysfunction. Daytime symptoms are myriad and include fatigue, lack of energy, decreased mood, irritability, and proneness to errors.

Chronic insomnia, which affects around 10% of adults, is defined as insomnia which occurs at least 3 nights per week for at least 3 months.

The long-term consequences can be significant and include impairment in cognition, mood and performance; greater use of healthcare resources; workplace accidents; depression; suicide; and substance abuse.
